Progress Reports

The Progress Reports window opens Friday,
October 5th

What does that mean??
Progress Reports and Report Cards will be available online through Illuminate.  On Oct. 5, you will gain access to both your child's Progress Report and my grade books.  You will be able to check on your child's progress at the mid-way point in the trimester. In order to access your child's Progress Report & Report Card, you will need to set up your Parent Portal using the directions/personalized access code.  If you are not already set up with Illuminate, a letter will be coming home from the Mundy office next week to give you all the information you need.

Grades

I will be starting to put final grades from assignments into Illuminate so that I can start preparing progress reports next week.  If your student is missing assignments, then it is reflected in the gradebook.  Please check in with your kiddo in regards to their work.  It would be a bummer for kids to have low grades due to missing assignments.

Every day, I remind kids what they should be working on during live and asynchronous time.  Unfortunately it is difficult to hold them accountable or check in with them the same way I would in the classroom.  I showed them how to view "missing" and "completed" assignments in google classroom.  They should also be able to show this to you.

To help you stay on top of things, I am sending emails over the weekend to inform you [and your child] if there is any missing or incomplete work from the week.  I am trying to help the kids to see what needs to be done or finished and save them from getting a low score or a zero.   I would rather their grades show what they can do versus a score based on missing work.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  And as always, thank you for your support with your kiddos at home.  I could definitely not do this without you.

Accelerated Reader

Our class is starting to use Accelerated Reader!!
Accelerated Reader [AR] is an online program that allows your child to take comprehension quizzes on books they've read.  AR is a way for you us to track what books your child is reading and how well they comprehend.    In the past, quizzes could only be taken at school, but with Distance Learning, students now have access at home.  Please don't help them with the quizzes ... it's not about how well YOU remember what you've read.  8-)

Next week I will show the kids how to log in so that they can start when they finish their next book!!

XtraMath for Math Facts

Last week, the kids signed in to XtraMath class online. The link is on my website. This is an easy, FREE, program that can be used to practice math facts. The most common question I get is...how can I help my child succeed in 4th grade?? Mastering math facts will help them be more confident as we tackle the more complex concepts later in the year. We no longer do time tests as speed is not really important. Accuracy is important. This is also a way that a struggling student can practice in the privacy of their own home to get better.  I am asking students to do one session each day which takes about 5 minutes.  Right now everyone is on addition & subtraction--and moving forward into multiplication & division as needed.  Later on I will move everyone to multiplication & division as these are the most important facts for 4th grade math.

SO PROUD!!

We had another great week!!

MAP testing is always a challenge--even when we are in person--so the fact that we stuck with it is AMAZING!!  I am so proud of our class--they are so patient with tech issues and helpful to each other.  They are figuring out the schedule and starting to manage their independent time better.  With the challenges that Distance Learning can throw our way, I am proud of their hard work, perseverance and willingness to try.  I am so happy to be their teacher!

WIFI Troubleshooting Tips

WIFI -  depends on what wifi you have and how many people are using it.

WIFI Troubleshooting Tips - Try these things:

1. You may need to move closer to the router, or open doors or remove large obstacles to the signal.

2. When possible, reduce the number of devices using your WIFI network during your class

3. Those sharing the WIFI during your class time should refrain from streaming video or doing large file uploads/downloads

4. If you have both a 2.4Gigahertz and a 5.0 Ghz band of your home WIFI network, try the other one (the 2.4Gz band has a longer range, but the 5Gz band can be faster).

5. If you have a sibling who is streaming or other intensive use, collaborate to make sure you are on different bands.

6. You may need to restart the router (let others now, as the signal will be lost)

Clearing Chromebooks

Here is a link to a video that will help clean up some of the issues students are having with their Chromebook and prevent the need for an exchange.

If this does not resolve the problem, please have them email Mrs Sagara directly.  Her email is: DianeS@fsusd.org

Happy Friday!!

Patience - NYC Preschool | Upper West Side Preschool | New York City

As we continue to learn and grow with Distance Learning, I appreciate your patience.  I know it can but tough at times--technology, schedules, curriculum--sometimes it's more than we can handle.  Just as your child is getting used to 4th grade [and me], I am also still getting to know your child and figuring out the best way to get work out to them.  It's definitely a work in progress...

I am trying to be available online to your child throughout the day [during "Independent" time] so that hopefully they are not constantly running to you, but starting to take some initiative in their own learning and seeking out help when they need it -- from me!!
