COLOMA!!!

FINAL COLOMA PAYMENT:  The final payment for camp is due!!!  I sent home a note last week indicating your (if any) balance.  Please have all money in to me us January 24--that's FRIDAY!!!
We will need to make our final payment to Coloma soon after that.

MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM:  Attached to the Coloma money information is a lavender Medical Information Form for camp.  Please fill it out in its entirety (both sides) and return to me ASAP.  If your child will require any medication while at camp (both prescription and OTC), the form must be signed by your child’s doctor.  Your child will not be allowed to keep the medication with them.  We will keep it safe and provide the medication when/as needed.  Please don’t send “just in case…” medication—if your child is sick enough to need medicine, s/he will most likely need to go home.

MAP Testing

We will  be taking our Winter MAP ELA & MATH tests on
February 11-12-13.
Please do not schedule doctor appointments during this time. Thank you.

Charged Chromebooks

It is essential that your student brings their Chromebook fully charged everyday.   Some days we have 4 or 5 kids daily trading off charging on two chargers. You might try setting up a dedicated charging station at your house [like you probably have for your own phone]. Have your child make it a habit to plug it in as soon as they get home. Thank you for helping your child be successful in school.

Changes in Room 600

It's hard to believe that the year is about 1/2 over--Progress Reports are due at the end of the month--which means we are also that much closer to becoming 5th graders...YIKES!!  With all of that, there are some changes happening in room 600 that I wanted you to be aware of.  The kids have known about these upcoming changes for a while, but I wanted to keep you in the loop!

CHANGE #1 = HOME LINKS
Just like before, math Home Links will get started at school.  Depending on how much your child gets done, s/he may need to finish up at home.  It will be listed in the "Unfinished Work" section of our agendas.  I will no longer be giving "WIN TIME" to finish up Home Links from the day before.  Whatever your child doesn't finish in class, will need to be finished up at home and brought back to school the next day.

CHANGE #2= PADLET
Each week, your child has one "Padlet" response to complete.  I post a quote that your child needs to interpret by telling what it means to them.  We will now start listing Padlet in the "MUST DO" section of our agendas.  Your child has one Padlet to do each week with 4 days to complete it.  I will also no longer be giving "WIN TIME" to complete this task.  It literally takes less than 5 minutes and there is only ONE per week.  They can do it!!

UNIT 4 ~ Multiplication

Throughout Unit 4, we have learned FOUR different strategies to multiply multi-digit numbers:
  1. Partitioning Rectangles
  2. Partial Products
  3. Traditional Algorithm
  4. Lattice Method
We will be reviewing and studying for a test next week.  Unless it says to use a specific strategy on the test, I have been telling the kids to use WHATEVER STRATEGY IS MOST SUCCESSFUL for them!   Pleas don't force them into using the traditional algorithm ["old school math"....HA!!] unless they are 100% [well...for the most part] successful with that strategy.

Math Facts a MUST in 4th Grade!!

Today I gave the students an "old School"  Math Time Test. The page contained 100 multiplication problems. Before we took it I explained to the students that we used to give these daily to build up their math fact skills. We have been told not to administer math time tests.  I removed the stress of "test" and "time". Kids were given about 10 minutes for the page.
As we move in to the more complex applications of math it is frustrating to see the students grasp the concept but get the problem wrong because of incorrect math facts.  I am allowing students to use multiplication tables. These are great tools but in less than a month when we take the Math MAP tests and later the CAASPP test, these tools will not be available.
I will continue to give these "untimed non test math fact pages" each week. I suggest the students take them home and finish them. They can also cover answers with a paper and practice them.  Feel free to print out practice sheets from:
