Thinking Journals

We are switching our Thinking Journals to Fridays only. Our current schedule gives us very little time to cover our Science and Social Studies in the afternoon. On Fridays, we will write one reflection about "What stuck with us this week."  Therefore you only need to check for Thinking Journals on Friday. I hope you can find time to listen to your child read their reflection on the week and sign it. Thanks!

Book Reports

This week I assigned the 1st Trimester Book Report.  Projects are due Wednesday, October 30th.  Students choose what genre they want to read & the which project they want to complete. Right now your child's focus should be on finding a book to read & getting it read in the next few weeks. Directions to each of the three projects will be posted on my website HERE. Use these as a reference when helping your child decide on a project.  Once s/he has decided, I will give them a "hard copy" of the instructions with the added graphics & examples.

Picture Day is Friday, September 27th.

Why read every night?

Growth Mindset Retakes

Our first graded Math Quiz will be coming home Friday. If your child earned a D or F, you will see the following green slip attached.

Growth Mindset Retake: Failure is not an option in room 600--we are a Growth Mindset Classroom. Receiving a “D” or “F” means I just don’t know it “YET.” Therefore ”D” and  “F” papers can retake tests. This is your chance to revisit, practice, and master your understanding of a concept. Please make all corrections on a separate piece of paper & staple to the back of your test--do not write on the actual test. Return within one week to receive a possible 70%, if all correct and all work shown. Must be complete!

Illuminate Parent Portal

As you know, FSUSD no longer utilizes paper Progress Reports or Report Cards. All reports are accessed electronically. Last year you received your personalized portal letter with your access information. This information remains the same this year and you access it in the same way. The link below will walk you through the process. If you are NEW to our District, I will be giving you your access code letter. If you have difficulty accessing your account, please contact our office. Once I have input my paper grades to Illuminate, I will open parent access.

Amazon Donations

Our students are lucky to have 21st Century desks and chairs!!  We love the flexibility of being able to easily move around the room and collaborate with our peers.  However, they lack storage.  Students have personal cubbies--but, trips to our cubbies several times a day is becoming a waste of time.

We would like to get a class set of this "Chairback Buddy Pocket" in order to give us some storage at our seats--so that some our materials are more readily available to us.
If you feel so inclined, feel free to visit my Amazon List [click on the link below] to donate to the classroom.  We are hoping to "clear the list" soon.  Thank you for your support!!

CODS

We had a great parent meeting about Coloma on Monday. I will be showing the video we watched to the kids next week. We are very excited that we will be able to attend this great learning opportunity from March 2nd-4th. [Students that do not attend are still required to attend school.] Look for a green paper coming home soon asking if your child will /will not be attending Coloma so we can get an initial head count.

If you are interested in being considered as a chaperone, please let your classroom teacher know and we will send home an application.  Unfortunately, we cannot take every parent that wants to attend; it will depend on our student numbers.

CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH ADVENTURE

Learning about the past... to change the future

The Coloma Outdoor Discovery School's California Gold Rush program is designed for fourth graders and integrates California Content and Common Core Standards. CODS' goal is to celebrate the culture, music, and folklore of the California Gold Rush while using lessons of the past to awaken students' interest and sense of responsibility for the environment.

Grades in Google Classroom

Image result for google classroom

Most of your child's graded work is completed in Google Classroom. I grade and comment on their work in Google Classroom. Grades are reported back to them through their GMAIL Ask your child to log on and show you. There is not a "link" or a "code' I can give parents, because you must be a student in my class to have access. This is a great system as we no longer have "lost" papers and the work

MAP Assessments

We will be testing on Wednesday [9/18] and Thursday [9/19].
Students MUST bring their CHARGED DISTRICT-ISSUED CHROMEBOOK to test on those days!!

MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing will take place THREE times during our school year.  These tests are done on a computer and they measure academic growth throughout the year.  The tests are unique as they can adapt to your your students's level of learning!  Each student has the same opportunity to set goals for themselves and to succeed while maintaining a positive attitude toward testing!  MAP tests take a shorter amount of time to administer and give us detailed accurate information about their growth.  Check out THIS Parent's Guide to MAP Growth!

Scholastic Book Orders

The link to the 4th grade Scholastic catalogs is below.
Reading is so important to a child's success in school and beyond. Scholastic is an easy, inexpensive way to add to your child's home library. Classroom points earned from your orders are used to purchase new books for our classroom lending library and to get FREE books to give throughout the year.
Please order online using our special code.  You can also log in to the Scholastic Website to order from any of the catalogs--different grade levels, specific authors, topics, or themes.  Have fun browsing!!

Padlet

PADLET is an online tool we use to discuss questions and quotations. It is a chance for every child to be able to express themselves to an audience. A new PADLET will be posted each week on the website and I will post their responses to Twitter.  This week no names were used so the kids could express their inner thoughts. Most weeks, they will include their names. It is important for kids to know they are not alone and that others feel the same things.

Fingerprinting
