Get the REMIND app!!

The REMIND app is a great way to stay connected with what's happening in class.
Green Valley Middle School uses it A LOT--for school-wide and individual teachers updates--so why not set up now??  As a parent I LOVE getting updates so that I can stay informed with what's going on in my kids' classes.
Give it a try!!

4th Grade Boot Camp

Image result for boot camp

You are not the only parent wondering if your child will "get" 4th grade. They may be struggling now but I promise they will "Get it" and absolutely AMAZE you by spring time!
4th Grade is a huge leap from 3rd grade. These first few weeks are like BOOT CAMP as children adjust to the rigor and fast pace of 4th grade.  With the elimination of homework teachers must squeeze even more into the instructional day so we don't leave anything out.
I am sure your kids are tired at the end of each day. They should be!! School is your child's place of work. While we make learning fun and engaging, it is work. 4th grade students are expected to do more work independently. Be patient and support them. They will get it.
Progress Reports will be coming out soon. Grades may be lower than you expected, but we have 5 weeks to get our work done better and turned in on time before Report Cards. Just remember these first weeks are Boot Camp.

Math Facts!!

Multiplication facts [through 12] are used almost every day in 4th grade math.  I am seeing a fair number of students that don't have those math facts mastered.  I often find that students know the process of a math concept--long division, reducing fractions, etc--but not knowing their math facts gets in the way of an accurate answer.  Please help your child at home by working on math fact memorization...make flash cards, quiz each other, etc.  It really will make math not so hard if these are mastered.
**Even if your child "finished" XtraMath in 3rd grade, I can reset or challenge their program to meet their needs.  It may be beneficial for some to just start over to recover from the "summer slide."

Unit Tests in Science & Social Studies

Instead of paper and pencil multiple choice/fill in the blank/essay tests, we utilize a performance tasks to measure understanding and mastery in Science and Social Studies. Instead of depending on a textbook for knowledge, your child has researched, on their own, California Regions [utilizing a hyperdoc] and "The Birth of Rocks" [plus class experiments].

They have created a Google Drawing showing their knowledge. These have been completed over four, one hour class periods. These count as a full test grade [100 points].
Your kids are amazing and they are so helpful to each other for those who lacked computer skills when they entered our class. We will be creating individual student BLOGS soon where they will post their work. Here is just one sample:

We will continue taking our MAP tests on [ELA portion] Tuesday, September 25thPlease have kids on time, well rested, and have a yummy breakfast in their tummies.

We completed MAP testing in Math this week. Our kids worked very hard. Kids challenged themselves to do their best taking anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete each test [with breaks of course]. We will use test scores to help develop lessons and guide my small group arrangements. We will continue to practice our MAP Skills online with targeted practice designed for exactly where your child is.

Book Reports

Last week I assigned the 1st Trimester Book Report.  Projects are due Friday, October 26th.  Students choose what genre they want to read & the which project they want to complete. Right now your child's focus should be on finding a book to read & getting it read in the next few weeks. Directions to each of the three projects are posted on my website HERE. Use these as a reference when helping your child decide on a project.  Once s/he has decided, I will give them a "hard copy" of the instructions with the added graphics & examples.

Grades in Google Classroom

Image result for google classroom

Most of your child's graded work is completed in Google Classroom. I grade and comment on their work in Google Classroom. Grades are reported back to them through their GMAIL Ask your child to log on and show you. There is not a "link" I can give parents, because you must be a student in my class to have access. This is a great system as we no longer have "lost" papers and the work

This is the pacing of our current required math adoption. Their program is based on a lot of spiral [revisiting] teaching. Not all concepts are to be mastered at this time. Although we have a "No Homework" policy at Mundy it is important for parents to check in on their child's learning. We write the daily lesson number in our agenda. We will review for test in class next week and send home a study guide. To access our Everyday Math curriculum online, students need to log in with their "S#" go to their GMAIL account. Click on the waffle/keypad in top right corner. Scroll down to McGraw Hill icon [tree/FSUSD]. This will give you access to all the lessons we have covered so far, Homelinks [formerly our homework piece] and many valuable FREE resources to help your child be successful.
