The Final Post...

It has been a pleasure working with you, and especially your child, this year.  I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by!!  The process of transforming dependent, shy, little 3rd graders into independent, resourceful & successful 4th graders is an amazing thing to be a part of.  Your kids are great and together we have learned so much.

I wish you all the best in the coming years.  Please know what a special place this class holds in my heart.
It’s been a great year!!
 THANK YOU!!!

A Note from the 5th Grade Teachers

A note from the 5th grade teachers to us, for you:

Hello wonderful 4th grade teachers!

You might want to share some of these ideas with parents. These are some of the topics we covered in our chat with your current 4th graders.

Homework: Expect approximately 50 minutes of homework each night in addition to 30 minutes of independent reading.

Math Facts: It's important that students come into 5th grade with math facts memorized (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Fact fluency is essential for doing long division. Summer practice is recommended!

States & Capitals: Fifth graders are expected to memorize the 50 states and capitals, their locations on a map, and their 2-letter abbreviations. Students are also expected to correctly spell each of the 50 states. Though we work on this all year, students who start on this over the summer have a distinct advantage over their classmates. We recommend students get a puzzle map to play with over the summer and not just rely on computer state games.

Recommended Reading: We expect our next year's 5th graders to read over the summer and come back to school in August ready to take at least one AR quiz. Parents should sign students up for the summer reading program at the public library. We have some recommended titles, most of which are series books:

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Loser by Jerry Spinelli

Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl

The Ramona Quimby series by Beverly Clearly

We look forward to getting to know your kids!

Please Return Classroom Books

Please have your child check around your house for any classroom library books they may have borrowed from our room during the year. They are clearly marked with STORY on front cover and along the edges. Thanks! It's time to start logging them in and tucking them away for next year's kids.
