Solano County Library

Below are some programs that are sponsored by the public library:

Read to a Dog
Children can practice their reading skills with friendly, specially trained and certified dogs. This program happens several times a week at the Fairfield Cordelia Library: Mondays 3:00 – 4:00; Tuesdays 3:00 – 4:00; Thursdays 2:00 – 3:00; and some Saturdays at noon. The monthly schedule can be found at http://solanolibrary.evanced.info/signup/Calendar

This program is especially valuable for reluctant or struggling readers. The dogs make the experience fun. They are patient and don’t criticize, allowing the students to relax. Paws for Reading cites a UC Davis Study: “UC Davis researchers studied the reading abilities of children who read to dogs and the findings were astounding. ‘After reading to a dog once a week for ten weeks, standardized tests showed reading fluency increased on average thirty percent. Below grade readers improved a startling forty-six percent.’" Learn more: http://www.pawsforhealing.org/pawsreading.htm
